Abstract

Endophthalmitis is a medical emergency in the field of ophthalmology, characterized by severe inflammation of the inner layers and fluids of the eye, which can lead to serious complications. To date, endophthalmitis remains a significant challenge faced by ophthalmologists on a daily basis. Some cases of endophthalmitis can cause fulminant symptoms, progressing very rapidly, requiring evisceration despite adequate management with pars plana vitrectomy, administration of antibiotics, antifungals, and steroids via intravitreal injections, as well as topical and systemic therapies. Management of endophthalmitis must begin as soon as possible to prevent complications and improve visual prognosis. The advancement of technology in the field of ophthalmology is driving more comprehensive management strategies for endophthalmitis. This paper will review the literature on the current challenges and management of endophthalmitis.
